   I always liked LCC, especially as the book is pretty detailed on how   
   it works.   
      
   As far as I know, the actual compiler has changed a lot over the   
   years, but the book is still pretty good.   
      
   If you want to target a new system, I believe it is a better choice   
   than most of the others.
