   ISTR that the GT C compiler had char as a 16-bit quantity, I guess   
   for this reason.  That was V-Mode code.  Supposedly the newer   
   I-Mode instruction set supported addressing 8 bit units, but all   
   the stuff we did was in V-Mode.
