   At least gcc doesn't do the suggestion in that particular case:   
      
   foo.c: In function 'foo':   
   foo.c:8:7: error: 'j' undeclared (first use in this function)   
    8 | x[j] = a[i] > b[i];   
    | ^   
   foo.c:8:7: note: each undeclared identifier is reported only once for each   
   function it appears in
