   Joe, this newsgroup is not for "standard SQL". This newsgroup is for   
   SQL Server, and in newsgroup, there the following safe formats for dates:   
      
   YYYYMMDD   
   YYYY-MM-DDZ   
   YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm[:ss.fff]   
      
   What is permitted in your imaginary "standard SQL" bears little relevance to   
   this group.
