   There is little reason not to go for the most recent version, SQL 2008.

   You may find the "Inside SQL Server" series useful. I'm not really updated   
   on whether all our parts for SQL 2008 are out, but the SQL 2005 books   
   will still take you a long way. You will probably have more use for   
   Itzik Ben-Gan's books on querying and programming, at least to start with.   
      
   But then it depends a lot on what features you will need. For instance,   
   if you project includes export/import of a lot of data, you should look into   
   SQL Server Integration Services.   
      
   And keep in mind, SQL Server != Oracle. If you design your SQL Server   
   solution as if you were on Oracle, there will be no happy ending.
