   Sorry, I cannot answer the questions about versions of Windows Installer   
   or GUIDs. But if I had the log files from the failed attempt, I could at   
   least have taken a look.   
      
   But your last paragraph indicates that you have not tested the scenario   
   yourself, even less look at the log files yourself. Certainly, the log   
   files from an SQL Server are *verbose* and difficult to find your way   
   in. But trying to diagnose install problems without looking at the   
   log files at all is even harder.
