   Thanks, Erland.  I thought about your reply, and uninstalled VB and then   
   was able to install SQL 2008 and its SP1 without any problems.  If I   
   need to use VB again (reinstall it), I'll cross that bridge when I come   
   to it -- I do most of my work in C++ and SQL.  (My interpretation is   
   that installing the different languages of VS 2008 at different times   
   was the source of the problem.)
