I made a list of the accounts that I found: Local System, Local
Service, and Network Service. Yes, I went through every service.

Not with SQL Express Setup. It did not like my administrative
   account (Loop\Gene).

    Oh?

Local Service did not work (failed installation). Local System
was not acceptable to the setup program.

    Network Service worked.

You mean like my Loop\Gene? It was not acceptable to the set up
   program.

FINALLY. This has been a very traumatic month. I definitely had
strong fear reactions comparable to someone who has been hit
repeatedly: anticipating more hitting. Software installation should
   not be this difficult.
