If Tony renames that file - while Management Studio isn't running -
would you expect then that Management Studio will run better, and
will re-create a new version of the file - having "forgotten"
any SQL Server registered with it? Or will it go badly wrong?

Of course he'll need to have any passwords required to register
the server in Management Studio again.

I say rename the file, in order to be able to put it back where it
   was, if that is necessary.
