   That doesn't make it much clearer. All SDCC targets have (by their   
   standards) reasonablish ability to address 8-bit bytes, at least in RAM   
   and have instructions to operate on 8-bit data (but so do x86 and amd64,   
   which are not widely considered to be 8-bit).   
      
   For all targets, memory tends to be somewhat small on typical systems,   
   so it makes sense to not have padding bytes. But there are cases where   
   padding bytes could give a little bit of extra speed (due to alignment)   
   in some situations, but IMO none, where having them would be worth it.
