I can't speak about any direct comparison between the BWM 2002 and the
current 1 and 3 series; I can only speak in general.

Safety regulations and customer expectations have driven cars with
similar passenger capacity to be larger and a lot heavier than the cars
   from 50 years ago.

The BMW 2002 has curb weights between 2,100 and 2,400 pounds, while my
135i weighs 4,250 pounds; almost exactly twice as much as the two-door 2002.

Of course, my 135i's N55 3 litre turbo 6 cylinder engine has almost
exactly 3 times the power of 1,990cc engine of the 2002, so...

So my car is going to feel a little less agile in cornering and braking,
but there is less difference than you might think. My car has very large
tires which tend to equalize the that more than you'd expect.
