   My guess is that although the app itself is free, the upgrade is classed as   
   an in-app purchase (by the developer) so you have to "pay". The developer   
   has (now) chosen the upgrade fee to be £0.   
      
   I've just upgraded my install to the ad-free and unrestricted speed version   
   for £0.
