iPadOS 26.0.1 seems have restored the status quo. The up and to the left arrow
is back at the end of messages.

I have also discovered how to get Messenger to work properly, though it's a
   bit of a work-around.

I still have a problem in Mail . When I get a message into full screen, I do
not seem to be able to get the list of messages in that box back. Maybe there
is something in the manual, I'll look.

Back to getting my head around all the changes!
