That's a good point you make that I was talking about only the map "data" &
not the app itself, where googling s'more I found this about the apps.

"Apps can be placed on adopted storage media only
when the developer has indicated support through the
       android:installLocation attribute."

Apparently even if the app itself doesn't have the "installLocation"
attribute set, all app data such as cache, user files, and databases should
be able to be stored on adopted storage regardless of that attribute,
because adopted storage behaves like internal storage once adopted.

The good news is that, either way, the OP has a working solution.

   1. If the OP opts for adoptable storage...
    a. If Magic Earth can install into adoptable storage, he's fine.
    b. If not, at least the map data can use the adoptable storage.
   2. If the OP opts for portable storage...
    a. If Magic Earth can save data into portable storage, he's fine.
    b. If not, well... if not... then he can opt for adoptable storage.

Since 64GB internal storage easily handles a thousand apps (ask me how I
know that), most of us won't need to worry about adoptable storage today.

Thanks for clarifying the situation with respect to adoptable storage,
especially since I haven't used it since the days of 8GB internal storage.
