I tried to update my wife's Windows 10 laptop today, after it's been
sitting idle for several months. Even though there were several
updates over that period of time, none of them can be applied using
Windows Update on that system because the expiration date for
supporting Windows 10 has come and gone. In other words, if you don't
get it updated by the expiration time, tough .

I faked out the Windows 11 installer by using Rufus to make the USB
installation drive. That allows for removing the step that checks for
compatibility (TPM 2.0, etc.) so that I could upgrade my Windows 10
laptop. Worked very nicely. So I'm upgrading my wife's system that
way, as hers is identical to mine except for the amount of installed
   RAM.

Yep. The laptop I had before I bought the most recently obsolete
machine is running Ubuntu Cinnamon. I used to use Mint Cinnamon, but
Mint turned out to have some issues and broke itself a couple of
times. I've been using Ubuntu Cinnamon since I first heard about it
(I like the Cinnamon UI) and it's been ticking over just fine, like a
   fine-tuned racing engine!
