Indeed. I had/have a Philips TV, which was a 'SmartTV', but became
non-smart rather quickly as its apps were no longer updated or/and
   stopped working.

So I switched to universal devices - computer, tablet, smartphone - on
which I *could* update/replace programs and streamed the video/audio to
my TV via a Google Chromecast.

When the Google Chromecast temporarily went out of action - some
certificate problem - I bought a Google TV Streamer, i.e. something
   similar to your Roku.

So now I have a nearly 16 year old 'TV', which is basically a
multi-input monitor, which I could 'upgrade' with a relatively cheap
Google TV Streamer, instead of replacing it a a much higher cost.

And yes, the Google TV Streamer will become 'obsolete' as well, sooner
or later, but I'd rather bear the cost of replacing a 'cheap' device
   than an expensive one.

Shall I tell you how old our car is!? :-)
