The update process is partly 'online', i.e. the system is still up
and can be used normally or is in its non active hours, and partly
'offline', i.e. restarting, doing the final installation of the
update(s) and possibly restarting another time.

The latter (offline) phase is what all the hoopla is all about. But
yes, on my medium level laptop, that takes 'forever', possibly as much
as 5 *minutes*, so you'll have to excuse me, while I'm running to the
shop to get the desperately needed "faster hardware"!
