   I haven't followed his career but I think his biggest claim to fame is   
   emacs, which I do not use. He lost interest in gcc early on. With nothing   
   happening the Experimental GNU Compiller System forked the code and moved   
   ahead. I believe it was gcc 2.95 when egcs was merged back in and the ecgs   
   people took over further development.
