   Mate has panels wherever I put them. Currently I have one - the task bar   
   I suppose - along the top and the apps down the RH side, both  on autohide .   
      
   I have 8 virtual screens in the task bar as well.   
      
   AFAICR virtual screens are not a usual feature, but MATE has them
