   Yep, that's what I'm saying too. That project gives a mixed message   
   about their intentions for compatibility. They say "Replacing the   
   Xorg server" is a "non-goal", yet they say they're open to   
   extending the X11 protocol. Which means they'll need their own xlib   
   library for GUI programs/toolkits to link against, and those   
   programs/toolkits might at some point no longer build with the Xorg   
   xlib as well, or even if they do, some distro packages might only   
   be built for the Pheonix xlib.   
      
   I'd prefer if protocol changes were left off the table at this   
   point, X11 already has extensions to tick all the major boxes such   
   as handling OpenGL and video. Wayland is already reinventing the   
   wheel if that's what you want.   
      
   On the up side, the site did point out this Wayland -> X11 "bridge"   
   project, which is promising for if/when programs like Firefox drop   
   X11 support:
