   Which in Open Source formats is generally not the case. You can   
   generally find something that will read an open-source data file   
   sufficiently well to extract data. An example might be MBox mail files.   
   These are used both by Thunderbird and Eudora, but in an emergency you   
   can actually read them in a text editor.
