   Is it MacOS that is serving up the SMB now?  Seems like it would be   
   "click, click", and Bob's your uncle.   
      
   I use Samba (with the "fruit" addon) to provide a Time Machine share on   
   my Linux workstation for Time Machine use by our Mac Studio.  I can   
   dump my config to the 'froup if you think it would help.

   Possible alternative: buy a Synology Diskstation, and after a few
