Wayland Takes Multiple Desktops To The N

Linux (and other *nix systems, like the BSDs) were doing multiple
desktops years, decades before Microsoft and Apple discovered the
feature. KDE has long had its own twist to this, adding a second
dimension to the desktop space in the form of “activities”. So for
example if you set up four virtual desktops, and defined four
different activities, then the number of actual desktop displays would
   amount to 4×4 = 16.

However, it has long been a limitation of the traditional X11 display
server that, in multi-monitor setups, all monitors had to be showing
   the same desktop.

Now, KDE Plasma is taking advantage of Wayland to lift this
limitation, albeit in a simple way: desktop switching on the primary
monitor becomes independent of that of secondary monitors, but all
secondary monitors are still restricted to showing different parts of
   the same desktop.
