Some are seeing this gadget as a gaming console
   .
(Plenty of other articles about it on just about every
   computing-related site.)

It is, only insofar as the Steam Deck is a handheld gaming console.
But remember, the Steam Deck is a full Linux PC, with a full Linux
PC’s extensibility capabilities hidden behind that gaming-friendly
   exterior, and so is this.

Where have we heard the “living-room PC” concept before? Why,
Microsoft itself tried it, with its ill-fated “Windows Media Center”
product all those years ago. Unfortunately, Windows is just too
complicated an OS to manage through an AV remote. Little Kodi boxes
running Linux turned out to be a lot more useful in that situation.

And SteamOS has already proven itself to be just as versatile in the
handheld form factor; with that track record behind it, I think it
will do well in the living-room, too.

And for those wanting to make the perennial joke about the “year of
the Linux desktop” -- looks like the “desktop” market has lost yet
another part of itself to Linux -- again.
