   Sure, but this doesn't really address the question that I'm posing.   
      
   Namely that regardless of the mess MS has made, since FOSS clones have   
   been around for years and have featured compatability to MS file formats   
   over this time...   
      
   ...has FOSS done a better job of not orphaning MS's older file formats   
   that MS themselves have now abandoned?
