   I suspect that "universal newline" means handling LF CRLF and CR   
   terminated lines 3 out of many line formats.   
      
   And not handling VMS RMS VAR, VMS RMS VFC, NOS variable length files,   
   NOS/VE variable length files, whatever fun stuff IBM mainframes may   
   have etc..
