   My idea was to shortcut the process by abandoning the idea of a full port   
   of VMS to x86-64. Instead, concentrate on the part of it that the vast   
   majority of (remaining) customers cared about: userland programs and DCL   
   scripts. To handle those, you could implement an API emulation layer on   
   top of an existing suitably versatile OS kernel -- like Linux.

   Yes. Because the number of customers has been decreasing over time, so the   
   sooner you could offer them a new product, the greater the chances of
