I have used PC editors (various) to edit source code on linux for years,
but with VMS I always used LSE for proper code. I never got LSE working
well enough for DCL, so I normally used either EVE, or sometimes a PC editor

I am looking forward to trying this, although my current VM host isn't
yet up to it, I have just bought another mini PC to try it out.
