   IBM (with its mainframe business) and Microsoft would seem to be doing   
   much the same sort of thing. IBM lasted a bit longer than DEC, but   
   that part of its business is clearly in “legacy” mode these days.   
      
   As for Microsoft, for all the myths about backward compatibility, OS   
   upgrades are now enough of a headache that large swathes of customers   
   have become reluctant to accept them.
