   Indeed. Far behind IBM, but a clear number two.   
      
   And I believe some at DEC had ambitions to move up   
   to number one.   
      
   Remember VAX 9000 the "mainframe killer".   
      
   Of course it was a fiasco (for various reasons   
   including delays, technical and business).   
   The late models (400, 500, 600) VAX 6000 systems   
   was kept running for many many years. But the 9000   
   systems came and went in just a few years.
