   I think the "literature" he's referring to is talking about the   
   alternative of having a separate thread for each socket, using blocking   
   reads/writes in each thread.   
      
   For a small number of sockets this may be reasonable, as it makes the   
   coding simpler.  But with lots of sockets, all the context switching   
   overhead between threads can be a problem.
