How to gracefully abort the tcp 3-way-ha

In the tcp 3-way-handshake the client is in the initial
SYN+ACK rcvd stage, now client decides to gracefully abort
the handshake, and close this (half-open) connection properly
(ie. cause a reset on the remote side). For this to happen,
should client send an RST or an ACK+RST? And what values
should(must) the tcphdr fields seq and ack have?
Or should he do nothing and let it timeout on the other side?
Is this scenario covered in the rfc 793 ( http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc793 ),
   (ie. sections 3.4 and 3.5 (page30+)?
