To expand on what Barry is saying, all you "know" has happened when a
send() call completes is that the data is now in the hands of TCP on
the side where the send() calls were made. You know virtually nothing
about whether it has actually been sent out onto the network nor if it
has been received by the remote. Sending data across a network via
   TCP is an asynchronous thing.
