There is a cda loader for Prodos 8 that loads a bunch of cda's without have to
boot GSOS. Also have to weed out the cdas that won't work with Prodos 8.
Pretty much any cda that has
to save or load files will need GSOS booted, but there are a couple that use
Prodos 8 to read and write files. One such is a SHR screen saver. The rest I
have in my folder are just calculators, calendars and help files.

   P8CDA - https://whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/p8cda.html - GS only.

There's not really going to be the equivalent of this for 8-bit systems, as
each application completely takes over the system. You could imagine an
ecosystem of applications that followed a cooperative protocol - e.g.
   reserving some memory and allowing
the Reset handler to return to a supervisor program - but other than things
   like GEOS this didn't happen.
