   Hi,

If you bought this MSTE new, it's strange that one of these would just
   fall out.
The MSTE has these on the MB as you have already mentioned.
If you happen to have ST Format Issue 38, Sept. 1992, you will
find some color pics of the MSTE motherboard which may help
   locate where this goes.
The MSTE HD Controller also has one or more of these IIRC.

BTW, are you sure this Red Resistor is 8 pins and not 9?

Also, it could have came from the internal Hard drive.
Not positive, but could be a termination resistor, if so, these
are sometimes soldered and sometimes fit into a small socket.

What kind of problems are/did you have with the internal hard drive?

I recently re-installed the stock HD in my MSTE, maybe I can
help you with yours if you need some.
