I'm not trying to promote Yahoo groups, but they do offer polls, calendars,
simple flat databases, and image storage for your group. I still like usenet
   better for just posting, though.

You CAN have a requirement to be a member to post, yet have public read-only
messages. Here is an example I found quickly while searching:
   http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theflyfishingreport/

I belong to several Yahoo groups, and I receive no particular extra junkmail
because of it. (At least that I can tell.) In any case, just use your Yahoo
email for the messages. You'll have one by signing up anyway. Or, you can
choose how you receive the messages (every message, digest, or no email at
   all).

The worst thing about Yahoo groups is that part of their advertising model
is to insert an ad every once in a while between the link you clicked and
the target page. And of course, Flash ads, but those are everywhere (not
   here!).
