The original Model 4 was the "non gate array" model. Basically this
means the motherboard is different, the screen was (usually) white, and
the arrow keys were (usually) split - up/down on one side of the
keyboard and left/right on the other.

The "Gate Array" model has a different motherboard, fewer chips, I think
the serial port in on the back instead of the bottom, has a green screen
and the arrow keys together in a group on the right side of the keyboard.

Which is "better" is up to you. If you want the latest and greatest
model, then you want a 4D, which was gate array and green screen. If
you want the original, then you want non gate white screen.

BTW, the term "Gate Array" refers to the type of chips on the
   motherboard.

I have had both over the years, and currently have only a couple of 4Ds.
   With hard drives, of course.
