   Does the drive TRY to read and fail?  It could be DMA problems.  The   
   PC bus has a voltage pin positioned such that if you tip a card slightly   
   while putting it in or pulling it out, it can short out one of the DMA   
   control   
   lines.  This can be a problem on machines that don't 'drain off' the power   
   supply voltages when the switch is off.   
      
   With the original 1000 you could pull all the memory cards from the machine   
   (and also the DMA) and then the drive would work without DMA to   
   let you know it was a DMA problem, but I don't recall if that trick works   
   on the RLX.
