   In years gone by, I had a Hayes Smartmodem 300 hooked up to a Model I, and   
   later a Hayes 1200 on a Model 4. They  work just fine.   
      
   For software, I'd suggest trying a few different ones.  I used to use   
   Kermit.  If Ira has any with docs, then I'd try those first.
