   Thanks for the detailed info!

Looks like the WD1010 is the way to go.

The reason I ask is that I've been looking for quite some time now for some
hardware to design for the hobbyist market, and I noticed someone lamenting
that no-one has developed a compact flash adapter for the TRS-80 yet. So,
not knowing anything about TRS-80 hard drives, I thought I'd look into the
feasibility of doing it for a reasonable cost.

I've already implemented a working model I/III in an FPGA, together with a
crude WD1793/floppy emulation. I've also got access to an FPGA platform that
already has compact flash on it, so my plan is to first emulate the WD1010
in the FPGA and then get NEWDOS or LDOS reading from a compact flash-based
hard disk. From there it would be a simple matter of designing the most
cost-effective hardware to allow the design to be plugged into a real TRS-80.

   Thanks again for the info!
   Regards,
