|    Adding HD to 1000A    |

From: t1000@rogerwilco.org              All right, all of you Tandy 1000 experts...here's one for you:              I'm trying to add a vintage hard disk to my vintage 1000A. I know there       are       lot's of choices, even IDE or SCSI is a possiblity with these old systems,       but I'm trying to keep this all in the realm of mid-1980's tech.              My 1000A (BIOS 01.01.00) has seen the Intel 8088 replaced with a NEC V-20       CPU long ago, and has a PLUS Memory Expansion board installed with       512KB of RAM and the PLUS RS-232 daughter board in the left-most       (outside) slot. Otherwise, the system is in it's original configuration.              I'm trying to add a 20MB MFM drive (a Seagate ST-225) using a Western       Digital WD1002S-WX2 controller. I have tested both the controller and the       hard disk in a Leading Edge Model D PC clone, and confirmed that they       are fully functional. I have cut the W7 hardwire trace on the solder-side       of       the WD controller, and jumpered pins 2-3 to select IRQ 2.              Here's what happens:              When booting up I see the normal MEMORY=640K message, then the       floppy drive spins with the drive select LED showing for a second, then a       pause, and then one or the other of:              A) The hard drive's LED lights up and stays on forever, and the system       hangs at that point and never boots. CTRL-ALT-DEL is effective for a       warm reboot.              B) The hard drive's LED briefly flicks on and off, another pause, and then       the system boots from my boot floppy. But any subsequent attempt to       access the hard drive results in the hard drive LED lighting up and staying       on, and the machine hangs forever. A CTRL-ALT-DEL is effective for a       warm booting.              So, it seems that I don't have everything set up just right. I'm at a       loss,       since all of my online research indicates that as long as I have the 01.01.       00 BIOS, the memory expansion board with DMA, and use IRQ 2 on the       controller, it should "just work".              I was lucky to get my hands several WD1002S-WX2 controllers at the       same time, and I've tried all five of them (yes, I mod-ed each for IRQ 2),       with the same results.              Any ideas?              TIA,              Jared              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
