As Mike says, standard PC/MS-DOS seems to work fine on these Tandy's, for
   me anyway. I've used PC-DOS 3.3, MS-DOS 3.1 and the originally supplied
Tandy version of MS-DOS 2.11 without any difficulties over the years. Of
course, I'm booting them from floppy since that's been the only way with
   no hard disk.

Mark, I may not have described the situation, originally, as clearly as I
should have. Please understand that the problems I'm experiencing are
well before an attempt to *boot* DOS from either the hard disk or the
floppy. My system will generally hang as soon as the POST/pre-boot
hardware discovery sequence 'touches' the hard disk. In all of my efforts
so far, I'm still trying to boot from my Tandy 2.11 DOS floppy, not the
hard disk. The only reason I referenced the fact that I have PC-DOS 3.3
on the hard disk was to evidence the fact that the hardware
(disk+controller) works fine in a more 'ordinary' system, which would
suggest looking elsewhere for the problem.

I should further re-report that I have dug up two machines, both 1000A's,
both with BIOS 01.01.00. I mispoke (mis-wrote?) earlier when I stated
that they were identically configured. Turns out that the first machine
(that started this whole mess!) has the PLUS memory expansion board with
512KB and RS-232 daughter board. Machine #2 has the simpler expansion
board (25-1004) with a maximum of 256KB installed. In both cases, I
cannot locate anything that looks like a PAL at socket U14 on either
board, so those references about PAL replacements on the oldskool website
still have me very confused. Anyway, same results with both machines, and
that's why I'm starting the suspect that the 01.01.00 version of the BIOS
did not fix the DMA issue after all. Both machines have that particular
BIOS, which has been noted as the 'fixed' BIOS (to allow proper DMA with
hard disks) with no further updates. And now I've tried multiple
controllers (but, yes, the same brand/model), multiple hard drives, in two
different machines, with two different models of memory/DMA boards, with
   the same no-go results.

Anyway, still curious to hear from *anyone* that has installed a
non-Tandy-kit hard disk in a 1000A. I'd like to know what controller they
used. But, on the other hand...if someone offered me a Tandy hardcard (of
any capacity) I'd surely jump at the chance! ;)

As interesting developments occur, I'll post news of my progress.
