   Depends. If you have "handshaking" (software or hardware) you shouldn't have   
   a problem. If not, you will start losing data.   
      
   Software hs, such as XON/XOFF works, but not well.   
   Hardware hs, such as RTS/CTS works well. I can receive data on my TI-99 at   
   38.4 and not lose data. But it requires a cable wired for handshaking AND a   
   terminal program that is programmed for it. If I use another terminal   
   program, 4800 baud is tops without data loss.   
      
   Of course file transfer protocols do handshaking, and therefore can go   
   faster than text...
