   Could that be write enable/protect?

On 8", you put a tab over the side hole, called a "write enable" tab.
Otherwise, you cannot write to it.

On 5.25", you put a tab over the side hole, called a "write protect" tab.
To keep you from writing to it.

Over the years, I've begun to appreciate the 8" method, b/c write protect
tabs have a tendency to fall off. Some of the newer ones wouldn't last a day
before they'd come right off. Tape worked better.
