Some of the self-starting games and applications (particularly those
written for the Model I or III) used a deliberately non-standard disk
format, so that the normal operating system backup/copy utilities would
not work, or the copy produced wouldn't work.

One software package (I think it was Super Utility) was so bad that the
Tandy factory had to keep some Model I systems around to write the
software on the diskettes that would be sold in stores. The industrial
duplication machines could not copy that programs' format either,
although the company that came up with that scheme didn't help much.
They basically provided Tandy with a program that ran on a Model I (and
only a Model I) that would make customer diskettes of that software.

The copy-protection fad was mostly over by the time the Model 4
came out (mainly due to all the customer support issues it caused)
but the merchies at Tandy demanded a copy-protection system be added
to TRSDOS 6/LS-DOS 6 by Logical Systems. They reluctantly put one in,
but it is very easy to bypass and disable, which was Logical Systems
   intent.
