XPost: alt.transgendered, talk.politics.guns, talk.politics.misc       XPost: misc.immigration.usa, alt.politics.homosexuality, sac.politics       From: remailer@domain.invalid              Two days after the city of Denver opened an emergency shelter to       accommodate more than 100 migrants who arrived in the city from the       country’s southern border, another 20 arrived on Thursday, city       officials said.              And more may be coming in the days and weeks ahead, Evan Dreyer,       deputy chief of staff to Mayor Michael Hancock said at a news       conference on Thursday afternoon. With the city’s Emergency       Operations Center activated to address the unfolding crisis, many       are looking for people to blame.              But Dreyer said Thursday that roughly 300 migrants have arrived in       Denver over the past two months and the sudden arrival of 90 people       at the doors of the Denver Rescue Mission overnight Monday into       Tuesday does not appear to be the outcome of an act of political       theater.              “From what we’ve been able to gather, there was sort of an informal       gathering, some on social media, among those folks themselves,”       Dreyer said of the migrants, many from South and Central America       including Venezuela. “This does not appear to be anything that was       organized by another government entity to direct people specifically       to Denver. Just want to make that clear … we do not think that that       was the case. No evidence of that.”              Dreyer’s comments Thursday stand in contrast to a statement issued       by U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper on Wednesday. The Colorado Democrat,       Denver’s former mayor, linked the arrival of the migrants on Monday       to recent actions by Republican governors in Florida, Texas and       Arizona who have bused or flown groups of immigrants to big cities       and more liberal states.              “Instead of playing partisan games, let’s tackle our broken       immigration system once and for all,” Hickenlooper said in his       statement.              Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s office told The Denver Post on Wednesday       that his administration is only busing migrants to Washington, D.C.,       Philadelphia, Chicago and New York City at this point.       Representatives for Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey on Thursday told the       Post the administration is only sending people to Washington D.C.              Dreyer started Thursday’s press conference by focusing on the help       the migrants need now.              He thanked the nonprofit service providers that have been supporting       the migrants and the city’s shelter efforts. Denver is directing       people who want to help to send monetary donations to Denver       Community Church, the American Friends Service Committee, and the       Colorado Hosting Asylum Network.              But it’s an ongoing situation that will require more support. As of       Thursday afternoon, 120 immigrants were staying in the city’s       emergency shelter, set up in the gymnasium of an undisclosed city       recreation center. That number was expected to be updated.              The city has released photos and videos from within the shelter but       has not allowed media inside or publicly released the location out       of concerns for the safety and privacy of those staying there,       officials said.              https://www.denverpost.com/2022/12/08/migrants-denver-influx-       emergency-shelter-bus/              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
