A flight attendant was fatally stabbed, and two men injured in separate
attacks along Denver's 16th Street Mall. Police are searching for the
   suspect.

DENVER — Police have identified the man accused of stabbing four people
along the 16th Street Mall in Denver over the weekend, killing two of
   them.

Elijah Caudill, 24, is currently being held on suspicion of:

first-degree murder of an at-risk elder
   first-degree murder
   two counts of attempted murder
He appeared in court Monday morning for his first advisement and is being
   held without bond.

Caudill was arrested in connection to the three stabbings that happened on
Saturday evening as well as a fatal stabbing on Sunday night, according to
   Denver Police.

Two people were killed and two others were injured in the stabbings in the
area of the 16th Street Mall, the Denver Police Department said.

Three of the stabbings happened between 5 and 6 p.m. Saturday. One of the
victims - a flight attendant who was in Denver for a layover - was killed.
A family member who spoke with 9NEWS sister station KPNX in Phoenix
identified Celinda Levno as the woman who was killed Saturday.

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants sent out a release
Sunday saying the Phoenix-based flight attendant, who began her career
with America West in 1989, died in a "senseless tragedy" while on layover
   in downtown Denver.

The death did not happen at the downtown Denver layover hotel, but the
association said crews who were laying over would be temporarily relocated
to a hotel near Denver International Airport.

"Celinda's love for her horses, friends, and family will always be
remembered," the association said in a statement. "We stand in support
with Celinda's family, friends, and our colleagues in Phoenix Inflight as
   they process this senseless tragedy."

The two other victims sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.
A fourth person - a man - was stabbed around 8 p.m. Sunday. He died from
   his injuries.

Caudill is believed to be responsible for the following stabbings,
   according to DPD.

A stabbing at 16th and Tremont streets that occurred at 5:12 pm. on
Saturday. The victim - a man - went to the hospital on his own and was
   treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

A stabbing at 16th and California streets that occurred about five minutes
later at 5:17 p.m. The victim - a woman - was taken to a hospital where
   she died.

A stabbing that occurred at 16th and Lawrence streets at about 5:54 p.m.
on Saturday. The victim -a man - was taken to the hospital with serious
injuries but is expected to survive.

A stabbing that occurred at 16th and Wynkoop streets around 8:06 p.m.
Sunday (the location was initially reported as 16th and Market). The
victim - a man- was taken to the hospital and died from his injuries.

In a news conference Monday, Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said that
Sunday evening, as officers were in the area looking for the suspect from
Saturday's stabbings, they saw a person running with a knife in hand.
Officers took him into custody in the area of 16th and Wynkoop streets.
Immediately after he was taken into custody, police learned about the
   fourth stabbing.

Thomas said it's unclear where the suspect was between Saturday night and
   Sunday night.

Mayor Mike Johnston said the suspect was born in Colorado, and has a
criminal history here. 9NEWS Investigates found the suspect spent the
better part of 2023 and 2024 locked up in either the state prison system
   or the downtown Denver jail.

In the news conference Monday, Johnston said crime in the downtown area is
down from previous years, and retail business along the 16th Street Mall
is up. 9NEWS asked how to reconcile those stats with these crimes.

"We acknowledge both things are true," Johnston said. "This was a tragic,
catastrophic event in our city. We unfortunately have seen events like
this in Colorado in the past, and they're hard to get through. It also is
important for people to know just how incredibly rare they are."

Johnston also said the city is committed to increasing the police presence
in downtown over the coming weeks and months.
