Getsman to Nancy Backus on 11-Apr-2015 14:07 <=- NB>> Other than getting behind, and/or not checking DADS...? ;) Kidding NB>> aside, hopefully it had actually made it to you... there is always that NB>> possibility, that it didn't. DAG> Heh. It may have made it here and I just lost where it was at. Not DAG> really sure; I've been distracted, and it's affecting my concentration, DAG> even for going back and skimming old messages, though if I'd miss my DAG> own name in there that's got to be the worst it's ever been. ;) DAG> 'Course if it was when I was changing around binkd configurations, DAG> maybe something nefarious happened to it. I suspect we'll never know... ;) I THINK, though, that we are back on track now, both of us... A few days before I left on my trip, the bbs I send DADS and ASIAN_LINK messages from went down inexplicably, and wasn't back up until I got back from my trip. I sent the reply packet I'd prepared over the few days before leaving finally AFTER I got back... ;) Turned out he'd had a massive crash... thankfully he's back up and running well again. :) NB>> Also, the aliases were definitely more part of the teen scene... and in NB>> certain networks... I just never bothered, except in one local message NB>> area that was somewhat a role-playing area... taking on personas to go NB>> with the theme of the bbs... :) DAG> Yep. The very first system I was on, which was the only one that I DAG> was aware of in my area for a _very_ long time, was alias only. It DAG> really got the concept to stick. I was always pretty fantasy oriented DAG> though, too. Not so much in actually RPGing, but more in daydreams and DAG> the like. Having a 'hacker alias' was always something that stuck DAG> close to home for me. We come to the hobby from different places... :) I came for genealogy, where real names are the lifeblood of the area... :) Games (mostly word types or trivia) were an addition... as was getting somewhat involved in messaging in the local areas, getting to know the other users and the sysop better. It helped that the sysop of that early board was a friendly sort, and encouraged good interaction. :) NB>> Aliases or not, the bbs community has indeed been just that, a NB>> community... and I've made fast friends over the years, too... both NB>> locally and more broadly.. :) DAG> For sure. The community that I frequented up until it went down DAG> last was one that I credit with probably keeping me alive through some DAG> pretty rough stretches in life. Maybe not keeping me alive, but DAG> helping me find the urge within myself to be safe enough not to get DAG> myself killed. Heh. It was a crazy decade. They always pooled DAG> together and helped their members in need, too. Even financially. There was some of that here, too. And for some, I'm sure it was a similar lifesaver as for you. :) I remember one teen boy I spent some intensive time in chat on one bbs (he'd started by trying to "hit" on me, until I told him I had a son already out of college, at which point he responded by asking for advice on how to deal with his parents)... DAG> I hope that I can roll out this shell that I'm working on to them DAG> soon here so that I can give back a little bit to the community DAG> that gave me so much. A nice repayment.. :) DAG>> here, though. I hope to have a trip to the trees under my belt DAG>> before April is through here. NB>> At least your weather probably will cooperate for that... ;) DAG> Well there's been nothing but rain in the forecast, but looking DAG> outside right now you wouldn't be able to tell. It's absolutely DAG> beautiful. We get that, too... nothing but rain in the forecast, but look out the window and there's sun and maybe some clouds... ;) DAG> I think that after I get some cleaning done today it's DAG> going to be time to take the little man and get out to some of the DAG> 'beachish' areas that've been recommended around here. I'll probably DAG> check out forest park then, tomorrow. Forest right in the middle of DAG> the city; you can't beat that. It's actually big enough to get lost DAG> in and not be able to see the skyscrapers at all, too. Sounds perfect. :) Most of our large parks are outside the city limits, but it's not that large a city anyway... and there's lots of woodland and green space around... :) DAG> I've got to make sure that I'm getting some time outside; cabin fever DAG> is absolute murder right now. Even if it's raining I'm pretty sure DAG> that at least the forest park trip will be done. Just need to treat DAG> my son's boots with some saddlesoap and polish first, to make sure DAG> they're nice & rain resistant. So, did you do your camping trip, yet...? I sure hear you on the cabin fever part, certainly is the season when it really is time to get back out and doing again... :) NB>> Hopefully by now you have received that second message... I did try NB>> yet again, and it seems to have been making it around, so hopefully NB>> it will have reached you. :) DAG> I got it. Which leads me to wonder... am I replying to this one a DAG> second time? Eeeek! As far as I could tell, this was the first reply to this... ;) I did go back and check my saved messages, to be sure... and to make sure that I hadn't answered it back already... ;) I think part of it is that we are having similar threads in three different echoes at the moment.. ;) ttyl neb ... BBS? Yeah, I do bbs. But I can control it ... --- EzyBlueWave V3.00 01FB001F * Origin: Tiny's BBS - Oshawa, ON, CA http://tinysbbs.com (1:229/452) |
