Most other terminals do part of what SyncTERM does in raw mode by default,
especially around the binary mode and bare CR expansion.  Telnet is a stupidly
complex protocol, and not all implementers reach the same conclusions about
what the various bits of text actually mean because the abstractions that made
sense in the seventies don't really match todays landscape.

As for your DOS BBS, it sounds like it simply doesn't have a telnet server
answering incoming connections.
