As heavy rains drenched the northern and eastern sections of New
Zealand’s South Island, drier but cloudy conditions prevailed in the
southeast in late June 2023. On June 21, MetService New Zealand posted
“for many in Central Otago, it has been the week of the cloud” on their
Facebook page. This referred both to high cloud that covered the
region, thanks to the rain system centered on the north, but also to
low cloud (fog). Otago is a region located on the southern half of
South Island that encompasses part of both the eastern coast and the
high peaks of the Southern Alps.
On June 22, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)
acquired a true-color image of a cold winter’s day in Central Otago.
The high cloud bank that had covered the region had temporarily
cleared, allowing a view of heavy fog that filled many of the valleys.
According to MetService New Zealand, the cold air trapped underneath
this cloud layer and the low sun angle along with the short days at
this time of year mean temperatures stay very chilly, even in the
daytime.
